What to wear for Bluebonnet pictures

They say everything is bigger and better in Texas, and in Spring that's definitely true. Nothing beats the stunning blankets of blue, aka bluebonnets, that fills the parks and hillsides in Texas this time of year. Whenever I see the little blue blooms start to pop up I start to get excited knowing that Spring Portraits Season is just around the corner.

As a family photographer I see a lot of different methods to outfit selections. I know it can be overwhelming to get everyone on the same page, and put together outfits that will look great when paired with such a vibrant setting as a bluebonnet field. If you’re planning a family photoshoot among the bluebonnets this spring, I want to share some of my top tips for putting together outfits that will enhance the beauty of both your family and the vibrant flowers.

1. Choose Soft, Light Colors

Bluebonnets are rich in deep blues, so you want to complement their beauty without competing with them. Light, pastel colors like soft blues, blush pinks, lavender, pale yellows, and mint greens work beautifully with the flowers. These hues blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings and keep the focus on your family. Use bold, neon colors or dark shades sparingly.

2. Go for Flowing Fabrics

The wind in the bluebonnet fields can create stunning, natural movement in your photos. Opt for light, flowing fabrics like cotton, linen, or chiffon that catch the breeze and add a touch of elegance to your photos. For women and girls, dresses with a bit of flare or soft skirts are ideal. For men and boys, lightweight shirts or soft sweaters will ensure comfort while adding to the relaxed, natural vibe of the shoot.

3. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of having everyone wear the same exact color, choose complementary colors and patterns that work together. If one family member wears a floral dress, others can wear solid colors that pick up on shades in the print. This creates harmony in the photos without feeling too stiff or overly planned. Mixing textures—like pairing a denim jacket with a soft cotton dress—adds depth and interest to the final shots.

4. Comfortable, Practical Footwear

The bluebonnet fields may be uneven, and you’ll likely be walking through tall grass or even mud. Ensure that everyone wears comfortable shoes suitable for the terrain. For women, flat sandals, ankle boots, or wedges are great options. Men and boys can wear casual loafers or boots. While stylish shoes are important, comfort is key for a smooth photoshoot experience.

5. Avoid Heavy Patterns and Logos

To keep the focus on the natural beauty of the bluebonnets, avoid clothing with large logos, graphic designs, or busy patterns. Simple, subtle prints like small florals or checks are perfect. Avoid loud stripes, polka dots, or logos that can distract from the serene scene and the subjects of the photos. Keep the clothing classic, timeless, and understated for a look that remains beautiful for years to come.

6. Bring Accessories That Complement

Accessories can elevate your family’s look, but keep them simple. A wide-brimmed hat for mom, a cute headband for little ones, or a cozy scarf can add a touch of personality to your outfit. Just make sure that accessories don’t overpower the natural beauty of the flowers or distract from the family dynamic. A subtle, natural touch—like a delicate necklace or a soft cardigan—will complete the look without stealing the spotlight.

My last piece of advice is to take a picture of everyone's photoshoot outfits together in good lighting; then when you're out shopping you can refer to the photo so you can recall what colors/items you have to work with.

I promise that when you use the tips provided above, you’ll create stunning images that highlight both your family and the stunning bluebonnet fields. Whatever you choose however, remember your outfits should make you feel comfortable and confident, as that energy will shine through in your photos!
