How to have an awesome Mini Session!

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

Have you heard of Mini Sessions before?

A Mini Session is a petite version of a regular photoshoot. They last approx. 15-20 minutes and do not include an outfit change.

I provide a specific date and location, and the session will revolve around a specific theme (like Back-to-School or Christmas). You'll receive approximately 5-10 finished images (each session will have a predetermined amount) provided online afterwards for viewing and ordering.

I only offer Mini sessions twice a year. There are a limited number of spaces available and it is on a first come first serve basis. If you’d like to be notified when my next mini session event date is, just let me know and I will add you to my newsletter list to keep you posted. Or you can sign up for my newsletter online.

Who can come to a Mini Session?

Each session is a little different, but in general if you are looking for portraits of specific people in your family, the max is three. However if you are looking for a seasonal family photo we can photograph your immediate family without a problem! Just remember, you will only be receiving between 5-10 images so while everyone will be in at least one photograph, there will be less photos to choose from to print off. If you want to include grandparents or any additional family members then look at booking a Family Photography Package or additional time slots.

Make sure you are ready before your session starts!

Mini Sessions are quick and and often scheduled back to back, to not waste the photographer's time, so there is little-to-no wiggle room on your start time. I suggest trying to arrive 15-20 minutes before your allotted time. That way you can see how a mini session will flow before yours begins, and even if someone in your group is running late, the entire session won't be affected.

Do a quick spot check on everyone right before your session. Clean hair, faces, teeth and clothing, etc!

**BONUS** I am happy to make small touch-ups to an image, like removing scratches, blemishes, or even stains out of clothing. As long as the touch-up is small, and the shirt doesn't have a complex pattern/print, you just need to let me know within 24 hrs of receiving your sneak-peak.

Got less than enthused kids?

Make it fun! Let them get in on the styling, too, either by helping to choose their outfits or helping pick poses from your inspiration shots. And, remember, with kids and photo sessions it’s all about relaxing and enjoying the moment. You’ll have better shots (and a more fun experience!) that way. Rule #1, parents, is to keep calm! I’ve shot plenty of families and have seen it all before. But, more importantly, your young ones will pick up on frustration if you get stressed, and it will all show up in your photos.

As a professional photographer I'm an expert at shooting all kinds of reluctant subjects, including rowdy, pouty or otherwise uncooperative kids. It’s my job to keep everyone at ease—children included!

And, unlike in school or at home, bribes are OK at photo shoots! A special treat, a trip to a favorite spot in town or even some candy can keep spirits high and smiles wide from start to finish. But if all else fails, remember that we typically get the “keeper” shots within the first 10% of the shoot. Let me know in advance what’s most important to you and your family, and we’ll do those first.

Final Advice

Just keep moving! If you've seen any 'behind-the-scenes' of a professional photoshoot with paid models you'll notice they are CONSTANTLY moving. This helps to create a variety of looks within a short amount of time (so the pictures don't all look the same) and it helps create more natural looking poses in your images.

If you are worried about looking strange just moving about the studio, have no fear, I will be directing you the entire time. I know how to place your hands, arms, and legs to get the most flattering angles. :) Just don't freeze on me and you'll do just fine. :)
